I am a coffee lover – a great cup of coffee is one of the simple pleasures in life that I have always enjoyed. As much as I love coffee, I find no satisfaction drinking average coffee. Once you’ve developed an appreciation for excellent coffee, it’s better to go without than to stomach the mass-produced, improperly-roasted, indefinitely-shelved product that you find in most hotels, gas stations, restaurants , and less-discriminating homes. Those little environmentally irresponsible K-cups are extremely convenient but… well you understand. And if you don’t understand, then our coffee is probably not for you.
On a typical day on planet earth 16,000 children die as a result of malnourishment: that’s 1 child every 5 seconds – 700 every hour – 6 million each year. Statistics like these are so staggering that they are hardly comprehendible. In March of 2008, as I held the corpse of a 5-month old victim of starvation, and as I saw the anguish of a mother who had been unable to feed her emaciated (and now lifeless) infant, the statistics became a reality I could not only comprehend but could never again ignore…
